Dealing With Toddlers

A woman I was fortunate enough to meet while still attending my old church in Wisconsin has a blog I check often. She has a 2 year old and just had a baby in January who has Downs Syndrome. She often posts "Nathanisms" - funny things her 2 year old says. :o) Since she didn't have time for that this week, she linked to another person's blog who posted about their 3 year old. Kids are funny, aren't they? :o)

HT to Jennie for the link.

Toddler theology
Silvi stumped me last night.

She was stomping on ants.

"Silvi, remember how we talked about how it's better for things to live than to kill them?"

"Uh huh." Stomp stomp.

"Come on, Sivli. Stop killing the ants."

"But you said dead things go to be with God. I want them to be with God."

"Umm..."

"And you said God helps us. God can help these ants, right?"

"Umm..."

She leans down and talks to a crushed ant. "Come on, little guy. It's OK. You can get better."

"Uh, Silvi, just stop stepping on ants, OK?"

Back to Business As Usual

We had a great trip home and made it safely back to Kentucky on Monday night around 7:30. God is good! :o)

It was too short of a trip, as I didn't get to see most of my siblings and many friends I wanted to see in the city where we used to live (we lived an hour north of my parents). We did get to go to our old church and catch up with several good friends, so that was very enjoyable. And the weather was mostly nice - very humid, though! I have been expecting Kentucky to be more miserable than Wisconsin in terms of humidity but it's been quite comfortable. I wonder if all the rain and flooding have made the humidity higher in WI. It's not unusual for WI to be humid, just odd that it would be more humid than Kentucky. ;o) Although I've heard we're having an "off" year - no mosquitoes here either and I'm loving that!!! They practically carried Mikaylah away at my parents' place! LOL! :o)

This is a short week for Paul so he'll be home tomorrow night - yay! We're planning to just enjoy our pond and yard this weekend, and enjoy being together as a family. I get to pick up my CSA produce today and will be planning a menu based off of that.

I also had another midwife appointment yesterday and things are going well. I feel so blessed to be having an uneventful pregnancy, when so many women struggle with infertility and problems during pregnancy. The baby kicks and moves, and he must be running out of space because I feel more definite parts wiggling around in my belly. :o) I only have 10 weeks left - scary!!! I have a lot to do yet!

I'll be checking your blogs and commenting as I have time. I missed blogging while I was gone! :o)

Out & About

This will be my last post for about a week or more. We're leaving tomorrow to drive to Wisconsin to see family and friends. My parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary (!!) so that's our main reason for going back. We're breaking the trip into 2 smaller trips - driving to Illinois to stay with Paul's dad tomorrow night and then continuing on our way to WI on Thursday morning. That way, Mikaylah's not stuck in the car for 10 hours. :o) She gets cranky on our 10 minute drive into town! :oP

This weekend, we tried out a church I went to while Paul was gone - a PCA church. I'd never heard of those before (Presbyterian Churches of America) but my friend, Lisa, did some searching, saw that we had one in our area, and recommended we try it. How's that for a friend? :o) She and her husband used to attend a PCA while they were living in Utah and they really liked it. I really liked it when I attended by myself (with Mikaylah, of course) and was excited to go back with Paul, thinking he would like it, too. I just felt so welcomed. A woman came up and introduced herself, saying she has only lived in town for about 7 months and she knows what I'm going through. She has 4 kids herself. We chatted for a few minutes and I enjoyed our visit. Then, during worship, a woman on my left waved me over to sit with her and her mother - how sweet! We did our introductions after church and I thanked her for her kindness to me. Mikaylah was well cared for in the nursery, and I was even excited to learn they had a Bible lesson for the kids, much like our old church in WI did.

It was no different this time. Paul saw how friendly people were. We even chatted with a nice couple, Steve and Stephanie, in the nursery - she mentioned she'd seen me last time but didn't make it over to talk. Our husbands are both in sales so they hit it off! And Stephanie made a point of finding me after church as well to name several things the church has (women's bible studies, etc.) as well as mention the local MOPS group in town so that I could start getting connected. I felt blessed that she went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and help me start to meet other people. The pastor chatted with us after the service, too, and we laughed when he said he grew up Catholic (me) and went to a lot of Baptist churches (Paul). We could appreciate where he was coming from. I could tell Paul really liked it, and I was thrilled! It will be nice to have a church "home" and start making friends and getting involved. :o)

We managed to fit all the beef in our freezer but I should post a sign on the door saying, "Open at Your Own Risk!" ;o) I made meatloaf the other night and Paul grilled out some steaks yesterday - mmmm-mmmm! I think we're set on beef for a while, don't you?

I'm slowly starting to get some things done for the baby - I got the bassinet down yesterday and washed all the coverings and got it set up. Mikaylah enjoyed playing under it like a tent, LOL! Then she threw in her doll and pushed her around for a bit. Maybe she will enjoy pushing the baby around - although the sunken living room does present a bit of a problem. ;o) Whoops, over the edge he goes!! LOL!

I'll try to remember to take some pictures on our trip and post a few when we get back. :o) Have a great week, y'all!!

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm......

Ok, so that title just stuck in my head as I prepared to write this post! :o) If you know this song and are now singing it, please accept my deepest apologies. ;o)

I just finished eating lunch with Mikaylah and putting her down for a nap. The phone rang while we were eating and it was Paul, who is - yes! - traveling again this week. I am beginning to get used to it, however, so c'est la vie!

Anyway, he was calling to tell me that the first man we talked to about a 1/4 of a beef cow had called to tell us our meat was in. What!? We have just purchased 1/4 of a beef cow from the farmer across the road. When Paul talked to the local farmer, I thought he'd told the first man (who we found on Craigslist) that we wouldn't need the beef after all, since he wasn't butchering his cows right then anyway. Uhhhh, it doesn't look that way. :o) So now we will have 1/2 of a cow in our already jam-packed freezer. Don't get me wrong, having all that meat is a blessing! But I am going to have to do some creative organization as well as not being able to prepare any freezer meals for September. I am a little nervous about that (who wouldn't want to be able to pull out a meal, thaw and heat with a newborn and an almost 2 year old!) but I know we can make it work. My friends and sisters-in-law all say that having #2 is a breeze compared to the first one - you have more energy and can do more. I am praying that is so! :o) LOL! In any case, our crockpot and breadmaker will be working overtime in those early weeks, I'm sure. Oh yes, and probably the grill as well!

Fun Weekend

We had a really enjoyable weekend with Paul's dad visiting us. Paul was actually on the way back from sales meetings in Wisconsin, so he drove through Illinois to caravan with his dad and they made it here around 11 p.m. on Friday night - safely, despite the bad storms and rising floodwaters throughout the region.

Saturday morning found us enjoying a breakfast of overnight yeast waffles and then fishing to our hearts' content on our pond! Mikaylah even got to use her very own pole, as part of Paul's 10-day trip to WI involved a fishing contest with teeny tiny tot fishing poles. :o) His team was called "Superman" due to the character on the poles. It's the perfect size for her, can't be wound up wrong, and has a tiny plastic weighted fish on the end. She loves it! By the end of the day, she even got good at "casting" the fish on the ground ;o) and then reeling it back up. She went nuts every time we caught a fish (which was quite often - the fish were really biting!). She would clap and squeal and run over to where we were to touch the fish. Thankfully it was a bit overcast that morning, so it was comfortable to stand around and fish. We saved 4 bass and 1 bluegill and had a nice fish fry for dinner - complete with potato pancakes, applesauce and rye bread! It was really good.

Sunday was pretty hot - sunny and clear with almost no breeze. We took a trip over to Perryville to tour a historic Civil War battleground. We were only there about an hour+, but we got to see a living history demonstration and tour the museum for free (I think the woman working there had pity on us because I am pregnant and it was so hot out!). It was nice to get out of the sun and we learned a lot more about the battle and its importance to the War.

I also had another midwife appointment yesterday and things are looking good. On my way home, I met up with the girl who sold me all her son's 3-6 month clothing and I bought the 6-9 month clothes she had. They are so adorable! :o) She also said she'd be moving to China at the end of the summer and asked if I'd like to buy the 9-12 month clothes her son has grown out of. By that time, I will have almost a full year's worth of clothing for our son - wow! :o) What a blessing!

I've been trying to keep up with the weeding and lawn care but it kind of gets away from me. Next up is to have Paul show me how to use the weedeater so I can do some trimming. I have Mikaylah's new room almost completely primed (there's a small patch around the large window I need to prime yet) and - after I buy some more paint trays - I can start painting. Eventually we'll have to re-paint the trim, too. I'm also working on compiling a list of recipes for some freezer meals so I can start getting a few in the freezer. I have about 12 weeks left, so even if I manage to make 2 meals/week, that's only 24 meals. I had a little over 40 last time. I think I overdid it, though. ;o)
